Structural Wood Components supplies Loose Timbers in any of the species, sizes and surface finishes discussed in the Heavy Timber Truss section. Loose Timbers are often sourced with Heavy Timber Trusses for support purposes, or to complement the trusses architecturally and structurally in other parts of a building.
In addition to Loose Timbers consisting of homogeneous material, we also supply loose Glulams (glue laminated beams) fabricated with glued wood layers by industry-certified manufacturers. These beams can be supplied with standard Industrial, Architectural or Premium finishes. Glulams are most frequently made of Southern Yellow Pine or Douglas Fir, but can also be manufactured using other species. Glulams typically offer the advantage of superior strength when compared to solid timbers of equal size, and they can be fabricated to larger widths and much longer lengths.
Examples of Loose Timber and Glulam applications include:
- Horizontal Truss Support Beams
- Heavy Rafters
- Purlins
- Columns
- Timber Ridge Beams
- Ceiling Beams
- Door Frame Members
- Diagonal Braces
- Other Architectural Timbers
Depending on the job’s requirements, we commonly add profiled ends, pre-cut connecting hardware slots, routed edges, and pre-drilled holes to these components prior to delivery.
One advantage of purchasing Loose Timbers or Glulams with trusses is that the material typically comes from the same supplier and batch of wood, resulting in similar grain, color and surface finish. Since we purchase both items in volume, we can usually supply these components at a competitive price.
Tongue & Groove Decking is installed as ceiling material in many structures containing timber trusses or loose beams. Customers often like to have the decking sourced and packaged with trusses or beams for several reasons. These include matching species and appearance, determining the proper size and layup based on truss/beam spacing, calculating the amount of decking material required, and coordinating material delivery with the trusses to which decking is often attached.
Load and dimensional considerations for decking are often related to truss and beam design, so SWC is already in position to assist with Tongue & Groove Decking orders. We can source most standard decking thicknesses, groove configurations, species and grades, in either solid wood or laminated configurations.
